Itaewon Class – First Impression

Name: Itaewon Class
Writer/director: Kwang Jin / Kim Seong Yoon
Date: January 2020
Number of episodes: 16
Genre: Drama, Food
Based on book/manga?: Yes, based on Webtoon with the same name.

Why did I press play? Plot and cast.

Thoughts and observations:
All I can say is WOW! Only one episode has been released and it’s one of my favorite all time episodes. Don’t hesitate and give this drama a try.

What’s good:
Acting: Park Seo Joon’s performance is stellar. He acts a wide range of emotions and embodies his character and “teenage” persona perfectly.
Plot: Interesting, it’s got many unoriginal points, but somehow it just feels fresh and original.
Script: Not a word wasted and each character’s lines are in sync with the character.
Logic: Little details of logic can be seen all around. For example, in the final scene, it’s because of the rain (and Geun Won trying to smoke) that he is alone, everyone else went inside to take shelter. This makes the scene believable instead of the Geun Won just randomly sitting alone in a public space at the hospital.
Cinematography: Top quality!

That’s all for now, will update the review as more episodes air.

Mini update:
The end of episode six is a total game changer. The direction of the story takes a drastic turn and in an awesome way. Up until that point it feels as if Sae Roy’s dreams are going to be squandered and you can’t help put feel sorry for the guy, but the tables turn! Can’t wait to see what happens next.

Who are the main characters? Which actors play them?
Park Sae Roy played by Park Seo Joon
Jo Yi Seo played by Kim Da Mi
Oh Soo Ah played by Nara
Jang Geun Won played by Ahn Bo Hyun

Theme: Time will tell.

What’s it good for:  To become engrossed in a story.
